Desktop Linux
As you might have noticed I haven't been posting very frequently over these past few months. That's due jointly to my studies and delving deeper into the Linux Operating System.
So, to help all those people not so familiar with Linux I have made a list of the easiest Linux distributions to install and use. All of these should be suitable for someone who has used a computer for more than three years, is willing to put in a couple of hours to become fully familiar with a new operating system, and has a computer less than four years old.
The list includes:
- Ubuntu: a completely free Linux variant based on Debian, with features like hibernation, fool-proof system update and beautiful graphics. You can download a copy, or order a free CD at ubuntu.com.
- SuSe: with it's system settings tool (YAST) and new open source community this distribution has an attractive feel, stacks of programs and a simple installer. Ideal for the Linux beginner, it can be obtained from openSuSe.org.
- Mandriva Linux 2005: while I haven't used this distribution personally, I've read great reviews about it, and currently used Mandrake Linux 10.1 which is the 2004 version of the OS. It is extremely stable, has a system configuration tool which covers everything except servers and is one of the easiest distributions to install. Their website is www.mandriva.com.
